food as commons / commonscafé

Is voedsel een consumptiegoed, of is het iets dat we delen? Een verhaal, een zorgvuldig productieproces, een cyclus, verbinding,…

Op 26 april 2023 hebben we Commons Lab en Jean-Marc Louvin op bezoek. Jean-Marc doet onderzoek aan de UA naar voedsel commons en eigendom. Hij is ook mede-oprichter van CONVIVIAosta, een lokale non-profitorganisatie die pleit voor de hervorming van het stedelijk voedselbeleid van AOSTA, en maakt deel uit van GEA3, een werkgroep over voedsel en landbouw van UNESCO Youth Italy. Hij zal in het Engels een presentatie geven ‘From food as a commodity to food as a commons: examples from Belgian initiatives’. Daarna is er tijd voor een gesprek. Iedereen met interesse in voedsel, voedselsystemen, commons, … is erg welkom!

Our current food system is deeply broken. Built on the promises of solving the world hunger problem with a free-market logic, it is now ravaging nature, worsening climate crises, exploiting people, and starving a good share of the world population while sickening others. At the core of this derailing food system is the basic idea that food is nothing but a commodity. People and movements worldwide are nowadays opposing this idea and developing new narratives as powerful lenses to bring about more sustainable, inclusive, just, and resilient food systems. Food as a commons is one of them, and food commoning initiatives around Europe are concrete examples opening new paths on how to decommodify food.

De Kompaan is a community kitchen, different gardens and a network of people and organizations. As an organization it aims at bringing people closer to each other and to their food. Commons Lab is a socio-cultural organization, empowering (food) commons initiatives and new partnerships.
